Sophie Costin first stepped into the world of L&D as part of the graduate scheme at Kineo – a structured introduction to the industry that set the stage for her career. From there, she moved to Brightwave Group, where she learnt about the importance of emotions in learning, through game-based designs and drama writing. When she moved across to Make Real to help them establish themselves in the L&D industry, she realised she needed something to super-charge this transition: a network of like-minded professionals.
“I just needed some friends!” Sophie jokes. A previous boss pointed her towards the Learning Network (LN), and she’s never looked back.
A Place to Learn, Share, and Grow
Over the years, Sophie has become deeply embedded in the Learning Network community, finding it to be full of genuine knowledge-sharing.
“There’s no posturing, no game faces—it’s all about furthering the industry,” she explains. Unlike other professional networks that can sometimes feel transactional, Sophie values how accessible and practitioner-focused the LN is.
One of her favourite aspects? LN Connect, the network’s annual conference. “It’s a great event—grassroots, full of interesting ideas, and a real sense of community.” Through her involvement, she’s also had the opportunity to sit on the judging panel for the Learning Technologies Awards, an experience she describes as both insightful and rewarding.
Advice for Those New to L&D
For anyone stepping into the L&D world, Sophie has one key piece of advice: don’t be afraid to network. “This is the kindest industry in the world,” she says. “You’re never going to know everything, but that’s OK!”. What matters most is connecting with others, building your skills, and surrounding yourself with a strong support network.
And for those looking to make the most of their LN membership? It’s simple: “Turn up to stuff!” Getting involved—whether through events, webinars, or online discussions—is the best way to experience the true value of the network.
The Intersection of Tech, Psychology, and Learning
Beyond her role at Make Real, Sophie is a self-proclaimed “tech nerd” who loves a gadget, especially virtual reality, and how technology can impact behaviour. But what drives her passion isn’t just the tech itself—it’s the psychology behind learning. Why aren’t people already doing what they need to do? “What are the barriers?” she muses.
This curiosity extends beyond her professional life. Since returning from maternity leave, Sophie has developed a renewed interest in learning from experiencing first-hand how children learn. She notes a shift in the education system—from competition and success to embracing failure and the unknown, and makes her wonder how this will change the workforce as newer generations come through.
Why L&D is Never Boring
Sophie’s journey through L&D – what she warmly calls the “eLearning carousel” – has been shaped by her love for human connection, technology, and problem-solving. And if there’s one thing she’s certain about, it’s that this industry is never dull.
With the Learning Network providing a space to share ideas, collaborate, and push the industry forward, Sophie has found both the knowledge and the friendships she set out looking for. And for anyone considering getting involved? Just show up – you never know where it might take you.
