What's it like to be a Director of the Learning Network?

Joining the Learning Network Board as a Director can be hugely rewarding but it can also be challenging and take up a lot of your time.

Why are the Board elected?

It’s in our constitution! The Learning Network is run by the members, for the members.

You don’t have to be in a senior or leadership role to nominate yourself. We welcome nominations from any member or Industry Partner representative, whether you’re an individual contributor, self-employed, lead a team or own your business. If you believe you have something to offer and you’re able to contribute time energy and passion to running the network, we want to hear from you.

It’s a unique opportunity to take your professional networking to the next level and make a contribution to the learning profession. It’s also a great way to develop leadership, communication and strategic skills.

An election is held each year in November to find the next Board.

There are 12 Board positions available in total. This usually means that 6 positions are available for election each year.

But, we all work as a close team and cover each other’s roles depending on demand.

If your nomination is successful, you’ll join the board for two years. At the end of the two years you can nominate yourself to stand for another two years.

You need to meet the legal requirements of being a director as defined by Companies House in England and Wales.

Additionally, all directors are expected to agree to the Learning Network code of conduct which includes policies around protecting the company and member data.

Being a board director is a voluntary position. By nominating yourself, you agree to give up some of your own time every month to help run the network.

The Board meets once a year in person for a full Board meeting and strategy day, then every month for one hour for an online Board meetings.

In between, we do lots of work and have ad hoc meetings as required. There are also opportunities to represent the Board at events like World of Learning and Learning Technologies.

You’ll also play a key part in our annual LN Connect conference. And represent the network at external exhibitions and events, such as Learning Technologies and World of Learning.

 

As we are all volunteers, the time commitment varies. Typically you can expect to work an average of 2-3 hours per week, although some weeks are considerably busier than others.

Anyone who is a paid member of the Learning Network and has the support of another paid member.

Any paid member of the Learning Network and representatives of an Industry Partner. If you haven’t joined yet, it’s only £29 for the year!

Every paid member and representative of an Industry Partner receives 5 votes. They can cast their votes against any of the candidates who are standing. It’s a simple vote where the candidates receiving the majority of the votes win the election.

Vote for the Learning Network Board

Voting opens Monday, 11 November and closes Friday, 22 November.
