Last December, I ventured to Orlando for Learning 2024—a notable change from my usual UK-based conferences.
Before setting off, I sought advice from members of the Learning Network who had attended before (thanks to Joan Keevill and Andrew Jacobs) and connected with other attendees to gather tips.
Organised by The Learning Guild, Learning 2024 featured a packed schedule at the Hilton Orlando Buena Vista Palace.
Over four days, L&D experts and professionals from around the world explored cutting-edge topics, including AI, leadership, and workplace culture, through a variety of engaging formats.
A Broad Range of Topics
The event covered a wide array of themes including:
- Organisational Learning Strategy
- AI for L&D
- The Business Impact of L&D
- Upskilling Leadership Skills
- Developing Workplace Culture
- Nurturing Future Leaders
- Navigating Change
- Data & Analytics
Innovation Learning Labs
Day one kicked off with optional pre-conference learning labs. I chose “A Learning Leader’s Guide to AI,” led by a stellar panel featuring Markus Bernhardt, Josh Cavalier, Renee Boydo, and more. Their expertise and approachability set the tone for a day-long exploration of:
- Ethical AI for L&D
- Preparing for AI in the workplace
- Personalising content with AI
- Improving operational efficiency with AI
A common insight from attendees was the challenge of AI adoption due to outdated tech stacks—a roadblock I’ve seen mirrored elsewhere. The session also provided an excellent networking opportunity, where I shared insights about our Languages Unlock programme that we’ve developed at Real Projects and learned how others are leveraging AI.
Session Highlights
Leveraging LMS Data for Strategic Decisions
Bobby Deibler’s session on LMS data revealed how organisations can move beyond basic metrics to drive strategy. Key takeaways included:
- Extracting actionable insights from LMS data.
- Identifying learning gaps and development opportunities.
- Aligning metrics with organisational goals like productivity and retention.
- Visualising data for leadership impact.
Deibler even discussed creating custom LMS dashboards to enhance data reporting, a practical solution for any forward-thinking L&D team.
The Value of Microlearning in Corporate Training
Jose Hoyos’s engaging session illustrated how microlearning addresses corporate training challenges. He shared examples, including an electrical contractor improving apprentice retention through:
- Weekly micro-lessons delivered to employees’ phones.
- Pre-training materials to set expectations.
- Post-training safety updates.
These initiatives led to improved satisfaction, retention, and operational efficiency. Hoyos emphasised presenting data-driven results to management to secure buy-in for innovative approaches.
Networking and Accessibility
Networking at Learning 2024 felt genuine and effortless.
Whether at breakfast, breakout sessions, or dedicated sector-specific tables, delegates were eager to share experiences and challenges.
The Learning Guild has and app that also played a pivotal role, allowing easy session planning, speaker connections, and schedule management. For first-time attendees like me, it was invaluable.
The Hilton Orlando Buena Vista Palace offered convenience. Proximity to Disney Springs added a touch of fun, and the room being on-site provided a welcome retreat from the conference buzz.
Keynotes
Three keynote sessions delivered some insights
- Simon T. Bailey on transformative leadership for L&D professionals.
- Platon on storytelling’s role in leadership and global change.
- Erica Keswin on fostering connection in an AI-driven world.
The photographer Platon a particular highlight of the three days with his keynote on stories that shape leadership.
Final Thoughts
Learning 2024 in Orlando was a well-organised, content-rich event. From AI to leadership strategies, it offered a treasure trove of insights for L&D professionals. The opportunity to network, learn, and even unwind at Disney’s Hollywood Studios made it a brilliant experience.
For anyone in L&D, this is an excellent event that leaves you leaving with ideas and ready to tackle future challenges. And if you’re planning to go, take full advantage of the app, stay on-site, and don’t forget to take a breather—you’ll need it!
